Mumford and Hemlin apply both pragmatic and theoretical approaches to definitively discuss the aspects of intrinsic motivation and creativity. Their approach is multidimensional and evaluates the entire framework that pertains to intrinsic motivation and creativity. At the beginning of the chapter, the authors acknowledge prior researchers that have shown interest in the subject and reference their findings in most parts of the reading. Also, the chapter bases the outlook of intrinsic motivation and creativity on the evidence that supports them (Mumford & Hemlin, 2017, p. 100). Most importantly, there is a systematic buildup of relevant ideas from a historical point to a psychological and behavioral perspective (Deci, 2012, p. 35). These are the fundamental reasons for agreeing with the assertions of the authors.

The chapter sparks new insights that stimulate further reflections. When explaining the concept of creativity and how it comes about, there is the mention of Amabile’s componential model of creativity which suggests that there are four major steps through which ideas are created (McGuinness, 2015, p. 57). This opens up ideas on whether there can be more or fewer steps that can be involved in the aspect of creativity. Also, this raises the question of whether creativity can be a spontaneous event/activity or it has to be a systematic process that is bound to certain steps or protocols. The whole idea of creativity also reveals its high correlation with psychological processes (Amabile, 2012, p. 68).

Intrinsic motivation and creativity find a lot of contextual relevance in all professions (Baer & Kaufman, 2012, p. 70). Regarding my professional context, many applications can be derived from the chapter. First, the chapter gives important insight on how creativity is created. This means that one can apply the concepts to propagate their creativity. It is important to note that creativity is a great aspect to adopt in most professions. Most importantly, the aspect of intrinsic motivation is crucial in not just careers or professions but also in life as a whole entity (Baldassarre & Mirolli, 2013, p. 89). Therefore, intertwining intrinsic motivation with creativity successfully creates a solid basis for propelling one’s career.
