The first narrator, Tania Joya’s, conversion to radicalization to solve societal problems, was a result of peer pressure and conformity. The fear of exclusion led to the adoption of traditional conservative views of her peer group. For her husband, the rebellion associated with teenage led to the exploration of various alternatives. His conversion to Islam was purely on religious grounds that was, however, radicalized by peer pressure and the use of social media and internet. As with many relationships based on similar beliefs and jihadism, the children were raised to be jihadists.
The radicalization of children does not always raise red flags, and is often unforeseen. For Christianne, Damien practicing Islam was not a conclusive sign. After his secretive conversion, concerns raised by the family were met with retaliation issued by coldness and aloofness, so much that Christianne felt they did not know him anymore. This was probably due to his radicalization. The conversion of teenagers is a global phenomenon that is often left undiscussed and families that fall victim do not know how to cope with it. Even with realization of the implications of jihadism, families that do not accept the conversion have a hard time dealing with their member’s death and often blame themselves.

Children are the most effective soldiers since they do not question their commanders or the effects of their actions long term. Isis (as well as other extremist groups) issues training for Muslim children through the parents, and this is more effective as the beliefs are integrated into their culture fabric. For non-practicing Muslims, the use of social media is used to propel their agenda and attract normal functional people that are not typical targets. This leaves those who witness this conversion confused and they do not understand the manipulation and logic behind it. This method is especially effective in recruiting pre-teens, teenagers and young adults who are still developing and are open to suggestions, and thus are highly moldable.
