Residential sprinkler systems are an important component for modern homes. Apart from being beneficial for safety, residential sprinkler systems are a legal requirement in some jurisdictions. For instance, in Maryland, every newly built hotel, multi-family home, dormitory, and motel must have an effective residential sprinkler system (Butry, 2009). It is important to realize that every year, fires tear through businesses and homes, resulting in the loss of many lives and property. Having residential sprinklers in place ensures that risks of injury or death are lowered significantly.

There are two major types of residential sprinkler systems: water spray systems and water mist systems. Water spray systems produce a column of air that projects a dense spray of atomized water. Water from water spray systems can travel distances of 150 feet or even more. Water spray systems are effective at directing water at the desired density from nozzles with aim of impinging water into the hazard surface (Dodoo et al., 201). Water mist systems are fire protection structures that use very fine water sprays. The small water droplets ensure that the water mist to effectively suppress fires by cooling both the flame and the surrounding gases through evaporation. The tiny water droplets displace oxygen by evaporation hence extinguishing fires.

The residential sprinkler systems have several benefits including saving lives, saving money and saving water. Residential sprinkler systems save lives because they are readily available for the purpose of suppressing fires quickly and effectively (Frattaroli et al., 2015). In addition to preventing many needless deaths, residential sprinkler systems save a lot of money in terms of property loss through fire. Besides, having residential sprinkler systems help to lower homeownership insurance significantly. Furthermore, residential sprinkler systems use water far more efficiently resulting in significant water savings.

In conclusion, it is demonstrable that residential sprinkler systems have significant benefits for homeowners. They help in preventing needless deaths through fire, save money and save water. Homeowners should seriously consider installing residential sprinkler systems to promote safety and reduce costs.
