Beginning counselors and therapists are sometimes faced with challenging issues during their attempt to participate in the development of our society. Counseling and Psychotherapy involve professional guidance given to an individual by utilizing psychological techniques in gathering relevant information concerning the client’s interests and aptitudes (Corey 2015). In order to achieve an individual’s well-being and mental health, counselors and therapists should be effective when handling clients. In his book “Theories and practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy,” Corey identifies many issues faced by beginning counselors and therapists. Among these issues, I feel that I need to work on my anxiety and perfectionist attitude.
A certain level of anxiety demonstrates that we are aware of the uncertainties of the future with our clients and our abilities to really be there for them. It is crucial for me to address this issue before I start counseling clients because of its influence on my performance. Anxiety interferes with my brain focus on the stipulated objectives and physical body control which are both essential components Counseling and Psychotherapy (Corey 2015). Besides, being anxious during counseling or therapy sessions can send discouraging messages to the client, therefore, hindering the counselor’s effectiveness. I am willing to recognize and deal with these anxieties by openly discussing them with my supervisor and peers as the first step towards dealing with them. The supervisor is glad and would love to offer his assistance in regards to advice and inquiries. I also have a few close friends with whom I confine whenever I experience feelings of anxiousness.

Additionally, I also feel that I need to work on avoiding perfectionism. All through my life, I have always been a perfectionist. I have always excelled in anything I commit to and therefore have high expectations with my counseling career. Corey gives insight into this issue by stating that novice-perfectionists should accept the reality that in counseling, one may not be able to succeed with every client. It is vital for me to address these issues since counseling demands the courage to admit imperfections and thereby allow room for other better approaches towards helping the client (Corey 2015). My idea is to act on reducing the number of self-evaluation tests to suppress the curiosity for performance ability.
