I must admit that this was one of the most interesting topics I did enjoy during this course. Non-verbal communication is a critical part of human lives and should be given more attention to limit the multiple misinterpretations that often occur during human interactions. More specifically, I found the course quite relevant to my life situations and would use the lessons learnt in this course to improve my interactions with people, and those around me. For instance, my brother is a pansexual and we live in a small community that does not appreciate such things. More specifically, my uncle finds it so hard to accept my brother the way he is, and he always tries to show him hostility. Although he has never told him that he does not appreciate my brother and show him hostility because of his pansexuality, it is no secret that he does it because of his pan-sexual nature.
The course offered me the best opportunity to understand nonverbal communication especially the role of culture in nonverbal communication. My uncle must be using culture to appreciate his behavior of hostility against my brother. I learnt that nonverbal communication has six functions and these functions include contradicting, complementing, repeating, substituting, regulating and accenting. My uncle has found it easy to apply the substituting function of nonverbal communication to let my brother understand what he needs and why he does not appreciate who he is. There are instances when he would just look at my brother with an angry face, and expect my brother to understand that he does not like him around and he should move.

Additionally, I could relate the different categories of non-verbal messages as used by my uncle to undermine my brother. There are different categories of non-verbal messages such as physical appearance, movement and gesture, eye behavior and face movement, touch, space, vocal behavior and time. I could not agree that my uncle has employed all these categories on my brother. There are instances when he will look at him with an angry face, refuse to talk to him when asked questions and even use an angry voice when he decides to communicate. More importantly, I found out the relationship between my uncle and brother is heavily influenced by the environment we live in. It is a small town that its environment expects everyone to be like everyone else and any difference is perceived as
Interestingly, I learnt how such a hostile relationship can be resolved through non-verbal communication. I learnt the need to use love towards my brother and helping my uncle understand that my brother decides to be pansexual and none can change that apart from himself. I learnt that the creation of a persuasive setting to change people’s perceptions of others and their activities. I planned to use this setting in making my uncle realize his powerlessness in changing my brother despite where we live in.
In conclusion, non-verbal communication was interesting that make learners understand and relate to their activities during their interactions in society. More importantly, the study of non-verbal communication is important in helping people limit multiple misunderstandings in daily activities. Society is made up of diverse people and we must be finding common ways of relating to them. non-verbal communication offers this opportunity for the learners and their appreciation of communication.
