Labels are very powerful, and they have the ability to affect individuals. According to psychologists a harsher penalty is sanctioned on a darker individual compared to one who has a lighter skin tone. Even the judge is unware that labels are affecting their judgement. Labels, therefore, manage to affect the way individuals feel, think and also behave. Having listened to the podcast, it is fascinating to note how much effect labels have on the lives of individuals.

Based on the information obtained from the podcast, it is apparent that knowledge is represented in the minds of individuals in form of labels. These are the elements which define people and determine their attitudes towards others or a certain situation. In that case, individuals end up becoming what they are perceived to be. While relating this to my personal experience it would be true to assert that I have held the thought that black individuals are more aggressive compared to white individuals since they have constantly been labeled in that light.

There are a number of models which explain this representation. One for instance, pertains to the labels pertain to race. For instance, the second day after Martin Luther King`s assassination, an experiment was conducted by a teacher on her third grade learners. The children were divided into groups of people with blue and brown eyes ( "You're not so smart" ). She at first insinuated that the blue eyed students were more intelligent; a factor that made them perform better than the rest but she later on recanted her statement and told the brown eyed students that they were the brighter ones, which led them to perform better.

Another model pertains to a study undertaken in 2004, where students were made to look at images with flashes of both white and black faces which moved too fast for the individuals to process ( "You're not so smart" ). Another image of a gun was then shown coming into focus within the static, and the speed of recognition by the students was measured. In the event that a black face was noticed it only took the viewer 19 seconds to view the gun, whereas in the event that a white face was seen, it took 26 seconds ( "You're not so smart" ). A similar model to this, pertained to the flashes of images which showed white and black faces and others moving concurrently showing weapons and tools. The viewers in the experiment ended up associating the weapons with the black individuals. It is, therefore, necessary for people to realize the power that labels wield and ensure that they do not let it cloud their judgement.
