What The case of Genie and your readings tell us about language (and emotional) development?

Genie's case shows that language is an essential aspect of the growth of a child. Whether the child is healthy or unique, engaging them to learn one or two words will aid their brain in growing. A child who cannot speak from childhood will have a hard time in the future, not only in terms of communication but also socializing with other people in society. Genie experiences a hard time when she is ready and willing to learn; no one wants to be associated with her. She seeks help from outsiders. It is essential, therefore, to engage the children while they are still young; it will help in their subsequent growth (PBS, 1997). The video also proves Chomsky’s theory of language acquisition wrong. Genie grew up without any knowledge of the language, but she still managed to learn it when she was grown. Therefore, with frequent therapeutically and practical sessions, we learn that such cases can be reverted. The emotional development of a child highly depends on the people and the environment around them. Emotions have a vital role in a child's development. Genie grew up in isolation; her environment was hostile; it affected her behavioral change. She did not know how to socialize with the people around her. Her case shows that children’s emotional development highly depends on the first impression they get from their parents and caregivers ( Rosenberg, 1993) . In future, they will reciprocate what they received when they were growing up.

What cues can educators take from these tragic cases?

Educators can learn various cues from these tragic incidences. Cases of violence happen right at home where the children are brought up. They do not have to go far to avert such instances; visiting the parents and engaging the children in such places will help in educating them on the importance of childhood development ( ApolloEight Genesis , 2013). Educators can also identify the tell-tale signs of children who have been abused physically and emotionally. Through Genie's story, they can be able to spot children with language issues and those who are emotionally unstable. Besides, a child's language and emotional development are very critical for their day to day growth. It shapes up their brain and their future social life.
