Late adulthood is generally considered to be from the age of 65 years. Contrary to what many people think, studies have shown that longevity from 65 years to 70 years is not always associated with some old age conditions and thus some people are usually strong even at 70 years and beyond ( Berger, K. 2017) . Dickens is my grandfather and he is now 79 years old. Although many people of his age are now inactive do less, I find my grandfather to be stronger as compared to them. This is because he still involves himself in manual activities like tending to our garden. However, I cannot deny the fact that he has changed over the years.
Considering the concept of cognition, specifically fluid intelligence, my grandfather has changed with regard to his capabilities. Fluid intelligence is associated with abilities like problem-solving and the speed with which an individual is able to respond to activities as well as attending to and manipulating one’s environment. For instance, my grandfather’s verbal fluency and the speed of working are notably decreased. As Berger notes, young adults perform better than adults when it comes to attention. This phenomenon is also notable in my grandfather as he sometimes exhibits divided attention while talking to him.

An individual’s health is also affected by old age. According to Berger and other researchers, some diseases only affect people while in their old age. For example, arthritis is a disease that the joints of an individual’s body especially finger and the knees. This happens due to decreased synovial fluid at the joints. As a result, the joints tend to be painful when there is motion. Dickens occasionally complains about knee joint pains and is sometimes immobilized due to this condition. However, he keeps using medication to manage the situation.
Aging is inevitable across all forms of life. Personally, I am not afraid of the same. Instead, I am preparing for my later years in life by exercising regularly and saving money for myself. Research has it that individuals who exercise regularly even in their old age they are not easily affected by some health issues like cardiac arrest and type 2 diabetes.
