Leadership effectiveness is vital to the long term success of an organization. Having worked in an organization with an effective leader, I learned the importance of effective leadership. I worked at a supreme bakers company for two years. During that time, the leader in the organization was very influential and respectful to all workers. He communicated his vision to all his employees and strategically explained the goals of the company. Through his speech, we all felt motivated, and he made us have a sense of belonging in the company. We were allowed to try new baking designs and styles. I remember he specifically congratulated me after I made a sale of ten doll cakes in one week. The leader ensured that the working environment was calm and with no pressure. Working in the company was exciting as we learned new things every day and felt happy performing our different tasks.

Treat People Right by Edward E. Lawler III.

Chapter 3 explores the end of the loyalty contract in organizations. In the past, employees’ loyalty was measured if they performed their tasks and followed the organization's rules. However, in modern times the loyalty of employees is measured through competence, creativity, and talent. Employers seek to maintain innovative and talented people as they would play a significant role in a competitive society. The virtuous spiral is when an organization maintains intelligent, committed, strategy-driven, and effectively organized individuals. The fourth chapter explores the first principle to treat people right: to develop strategies that attract the right people first (Lawler 2003). Maintaining the right employees is a difficult task that requires the implementation of well laid out practices. It requires ensuring employees; thus, they acquire a strong will to work more and improve their competence.

Self-awareness and Leadership

According to Kyler, the most important skill for a business leader is self-awareness. Leaders should understand their personalities, strengths, and emotions. Understanding oneself helps in engaging with employees and clients. Leaders with self-awareness can manage their emotions, accept their mistakes, and manage risks (Kyler 2018). Those with self-awareness void lack the skills to run a business efficiently. For example, they do not realize when their emotions affect their decision making. They also are not able to judge the effectiveness of particular strategies. As leaders, they lack the ability to understand how to get to their goals, thus not developing as leaders.

At my workplace, I have noticed that leadership requires one to understand his strengths and weaknesses. This way, the leader can understand where he needs to learn more and improve. Self-awareness gives an individual self-confidence, which is required in a company, especially because all the other workers look up to the leader. The leader at my workplace portrays self-awareness in his leadership. He can give meaningful feedback to any questions that arise in the running of the company. He is also able to make meaningful goals and objectives that are related to what he wants and to the values he upholds. The model helps individuals improve their self-awareness and mutual understanding with others.

Qualities of the best leaders I have experienced

I have encountered different leaders in my life. In the church, the youth leader was effective in communication, showed gratitude and empathy. Those were his best qualities. At the bakery Company, the leader could delegate; he portrayed integrity and was very influential. Respect was also much upheld, and his courage to take new risks and deal with problems was impressive. Both leaders have self-awareness and were agile to learn. I remember an incident when there was a need to change the marketing strategy in the company, and our leader had to learn the market status in a very short time. Great leaders have strong learning agility to help them excel in unfamiliar circumstances.

Johari Window

In my opinion, the Johari window is an effective model that helps people attain their real capacity. For example, an individual with a largely hidden façade does not interact with other people. When such an individual understands the importance of feedback and engagement with other people, it improves their personality or behavior ( Luft & Ingham 1961) . The Johari window encourages human interactions so that individuals can attain their highest capacity levels.
