The choice about the type of food an individual should consume at a given stage in life (infant, child, adolescent, adult, or the elderly) poses as one of the most fundamental factors of achieving a healthy lifestyle. It is also well understood that everyone needs food in order to survive. Even so and despite the fact that nutrition remains a crucial aspect of life at any stage, the choice of a healthy diet is most important at the stage of childhood.

A look at the life stage of infants shows that they are naturally required to rely on their mothers’ breast milk for survival. In fact, it is recommended that infants feed on breast milk exclusively up to the age of six months. At the stage of childhood, the body experiences extensive changes that occur at a faster rate as compared to any of the other stages in life. Indeed, the life stage of children is one where the individual begins to achieve physical development in the environment of the world as we know it. At this stage, the body starts to acquire strength of fighting diseases and other challenges that exist in the environment.

What is more, and important to note at the same time is that nutrition serves to influence the cognitive and social development of children much more as compared to the other life stages. In addition, achievement of proper nutrition during childhood goes a long way in determining the overall health and behavior patterns (regarding matters of nutrition ) of individuals during later times in life. It is well understood that a person who had proper nutrition as a child is unlikely to have unhealthy eating habits as an adolescent or an adult. Poor or improper nutrition on the other hand could easily lead to undesirable conditions like obesity, skinniness and heart disease among others.
