The article I chose is titled. “ Local doctor discusses rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria” was written by Chandler Watkins and published by KPLC News. Watkins (2019) states that increased use of antibiotics increase the resistance of bacteria towards various diseases. Many people have the tendency of using taking antibiotic drugs even when their infections are not very serious. Watkins notes that when individuals use antibiotics in high quantities and more frequently, the drugs become ineffective over time because the bacteria causing the specific infections will develop resistance mechanisms, and hence, will not be destroyed. Besides, most physicians have always been focusing on developing better antibiotics but have later realized that bacteria incessantly develop resistance mechanisms, eventually rendering the drugs obsolete. Consequently, Watkins suggests that the focus should now shift to minimal use of the drugs; prescriptions should only be made when it is necessary or when bacterial infections are severe.

Watkins’ article is very relevant is very relevant to the topics covered in class because of the scientific and research information it provides. He does not only state a claim but also delves into the details of the claim. The claim presented in the article is a problem which needs to be solved. He also supports his claim by quoting informed and relevant individuals in the field, such as physicians. Watkins’ article follows a distinct organization, beginning with a claim, evidence, and, lastly, recommendations. Therefore, his argument becomes valid and elicits useful discourse. In my opinion, Watkins’ premise is strong enough because it is backed by evidence, especially by authoritative figures in the field. Physicians support the claim that continued use of antibiotics could render them ineffective because the targeted bacteria may develop resistant mechanisms. Therefore, such evidence and discussion supports Watkins’ strong conclusion that antibiotic drugs should be used minimally and only when it is necessary.
