Gene testing is one of the technologies used in DNA application. It is a medical test which deals with the identification of changes in chromosomes, proteins, or genes. The genetic test results are used in ruling out or confirming a genetic health issue or determining the likelihood of transferring or developing a genetic disorder. DNA-tests are used in commercial medical applications in making discoveries in genetics. Gene tests are used in providing prognostic data concerning the course of a specific disease, and giving different degrees of accuracy, predicting risks in future illnesses on healthy people and their progeny. Most genetic tests are currently applied in clinical operations, and others are under development and it is expected the number of genetic tests will increase over the years. Genetic tests are used in detecting mutations and other complex conditions related to ovarian, colon, and breast cancer, thus helping in developing medication to reduce the effects of these health problems.

Gene testing is beneficial in various ways. Genetic mutations tests provide in-depth knowledge concerning cancer risks. It helps to analyze gene chances and mutation to ascertain the risks of getting cancer, thus guiding the lifestyle change an individual should adopt to reduce the chances. Gene testing makes it possible to detect genetic health problems early, which helps to treat them before they are fatal. Genetic testing provides the information required in educating families about the potential risk of transferring genetic health conditions and how it can be reduced. Genetic testing, however, has various disadvantages. When a patient is undergoing a genetic test, it increases anxiety and stress due to fear of adverse outcome and that lowers the quality of life of the individual. Testing genetic formation does not eliminate cancer risks. Some genetic results are inconclusive or uncertain, which means diagnosis and treatment will not be done. The process of genetic testing is also expensive, which means fewer people can afford it.
