Leadership is not about brutality or injecting fear among the subject to achieve the objective. Leadership is meeting the set aim by influencing people, and working through them until the target is reached. Based on some of the insights given by Machiavelli, some critical points are worth embracing while others need re-visiting before embracing. Machiavelli, states that as a leader if one cannot be respected and loved by subjects at the same time, he/she should be feared. Fear is not reasonable as it hinders respectful relationship between a leader and the subjects. In the political field, citizens need to be free with their leaders and express their concerns to them for the leaders to get to know issues affecting the subjects. With fear, leaders may underperform, and no one can correct them, the result might be resistance or rebellion by the subjects.
Safeguarding our states is the mandate of the political leaders. They need to ensure that people are protected. However, sometimes, it is not the consequences of an action that matters, but the entire system or the procedure of achieving such outcomes. For instance, a political leader may maintain economic security of a state by using a borrowed funds. The result is that financial stability will be achieved for sometimes. However, due to the wrong procedure, the economic consequences will have to be witnessed later. Machiavelli is right when he states that intelligence is a key to leadership. This is a position which needs bright minds who can ease tension among his or her subjects. It is not all about brutality but finding an alternative to cruelty. In the current political arena, the current USA president seems to be fitting in Machiavelli's traits. President Trump is one leader who likes being feared. He comes up, with policies which induce fears among the citizens, for instance, his immigration policy-induced a great fear the immigrants.
