Based on Martin Luther king’s speech “I Have a Dream”, the United States has witnessed a tremendous transition towards the ideal of racial equality. Americans infant mortality rates have dramatically dropped while their life expectancy rates have consequently increased. Their education system has seen tremendous and significant improvements. The African American college students’ number has increased tenfold since 1964. Racial segregation legally mandated in the American south has been disbanded. African Americans have since occupied powerful and influential positions, from the statehouse to boardrooms. Notably, in 1963 American congress had just five African Americans but by 2013 the number had increased up to 44.

However there are so many things still yet to be accomplished as per Martin Luther King’s envisioned political and social transitions. When it comes to equality the changes may be clear but economic equality is still a far-fetched reality. The United States’ income inequality has incessantly deteriorated with a very few exceptions ever since. Since 1963, averagely African Americans households continue receiving incomes of about 60 percent of the average white household. The percentage of Americans living in poverty reduced to 11 percent immediately following King’s speech. However, it reverted back to 15 percent as at 2011. Unemployment rate, especially for African Americans, has always been double that of whites since 1950. At around 2010 the median black household had eight times less the number of assets in a white household, according to research. Research has also shown that seven in ten African Americans and about one third of Whites accepted that African Americans are handled less fairly in their encounter with the police. About thirty percent of African American research conducted has shown blacks being discriminated against or being handled less fairly because of their race as compared with twenty percent their whites and Hispanics counterparts.
