The Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we are all motivated by needs that we need to fill continually as part of human development beginning with basic needs and growing towards self-actualization. These needs are grouped into two deficiency and growth needs. Deficiency needs are mainly basic needs that must continuously be met, and these include physiological needs, safety, relationships and esteem needs. Without these, we are prone to feeling unsatisfied. Growth needs on the other hand stem from the desire to have individual growth through fulfillment and attainment of these lead to self-actualization. In the current culture, it is believable that it is a mandatory to fulfill the basic needs before we pursue personal growth and the reason for this that everything has been materialized.

On the contrary, I side with the critics and believe that despite its relevance, the theory is not applicable to everyone as people do not grow through similar experience. It is because of Maslow’s theory that most of the basic things lose their value once attained because people pursue material things that do not later add value to their lives. Instead, the hierarchy should be inverted, and the first needs that individuals need to fulfill are the self-fulfillment needs which lead to self-actualization. Attaining this, enables one to know his or her basic needs and learn to value self than things. Additionally, experience plays an important factor because a specific incidence can lower the desire to fulfill all the tiers. On this same case, it is significant to understand that money is not a defining factor as one can have all of that and still lack relationship, esteem, and self-actualization. Money is only a promoting factor in that it eliminates aspects that might hinder growth.
