For a long time, I have had a passion for helping people with mental health conditions. I have dreamt of providing counselling to people of all ages, couples and families. I believe that earning a degree in the field will allow me to serve as an advocate for the mental health needs of my clients and the community. The degree will also prepare me to become a certified mental health counsellor and meet various people's behavioral health, emotional, and cognitive concerns by applying for therapeutic support, psychotherapy, crisis management, and treatment planning.
I have diverse objectives with the career; first, I intend to promote mental health by working with affected people to identify the challenges they face, resolve their conflicts, and enhance their optimal functioning daily. Secondly, I intend to engage myself ethically throughout my profession by maintaining clients' confidential information, respecting their dignity, and educating them on their right to refrain from any harm. My third objective is to promote behavioral, social and mental dysfunctions and disorders related to mental health, such as anxiety and depression. Besides, I also aim to prevent violence and substance abuse addiction through educational program and training interventions that I will conduct. Lastly, I plan to provide proper treatment to people suffering from adverse conditions, especially if the preventive mechanism fails to work on them.

Perusing a degree in counselling will reinforce me in meeting my objectives in distinct ways. The degree with equips me with relevant skills such as empathy will enable me to empathize with the patients and understand their feelings. I have excellent problem-solving skill that will enable me to identify some of the negative thought of patients and propose pattern changes to the harmful behaviors. I also have an interpersonal skill, which allows me to make quick rapport with people. My self-awareness is good; I can prevent personal issues from conflicting or affecting clients' problems. In my current workplace, I have been flexible and help colleagues suffering from some social issues successfully.
I am multicultural competent. I have worked with people from diverse background such as religion, race, gender, and ethnicity. I have respect for all people, and I always appreciates the perspectives that people present. For example, in my workplace, I championed a program advocating for promoting cultural appreciation practices to help build a more equitable and conducive work environment for everybody. The program helped in eliminating prejudices and negative stereotypes that people have concerning ethnicity. I constantly educate friends and schoolmates on the effects of discrimination and the importance of inclusivity. When working with groups, I often practice mutual respect and communicate clearly to avoid ambiguity. Subsequent, in team projects, I allow individuals to freely express who they are, present their opinion, and explain their points of view in the discussion. The practice has made me experience minimal frictions that come as a result of cultural diversity.
Stressful events are unavoidable in a person life; however, I have good coping skills that help me to maize its negative impact. I always try to understand the stressful event by thinking about the contributors of what I am facing. The process helps me to write my thoughts and consequently developing a constructive solution. I also commit myself to a positive attitude when face sing stressful situation. Being optimistic allows me to see possibilities within the situation and avoid unhappy feeling. Lastly, I take appropriate action by pinpointing parts of the stressful event that I can change and influence them better. Through the process, I may ask for support from close friends and share with them my predicaments. Sharing and talking often generate good advice that can also propose measures that can enable me to take care of myself better.
Adverse emotional reactions can toll on a person's interpersonal relationships and health behavior, significantly when the feeling extends beyond control. I always try as much to control my emotions to avoid adverse reactions. I always understand the impact of my feelings and aim to regulate them and not repress them. Also, when I am feeling overwhelmed, I take time and identify what I am feeling. Taking a moment help me to gain back emotional control by identifying appropriate ways of dealing with them. Besides, accepting my emptions enables me to get comfortable with them thus feel free without reacting in the extreme. Lastly, despite mediating and giving myself space, I also have a mood journal where I write my feeling plus the responses they trigger. The journals help me in uncovering the disruptive patterns that emotional reaction may cause.
In conclusion, I believe that I have what it takes to pursue the degree. I aspire to grow throughout the learning process and gain adequate knowledge in the field. I am confident that the research and skills that I will develop will help me improve people's lives suffering from mental health conditions.
