Measles outbreaks skyrocketed in the first three months of 2019 globally by 300%. In the United States, about 1203 individuals were reported to have had contracted measles in the year 2019. According to CDC, an outbreak is defined as three or more cases. New York City had reported about 500 cases. These cases were reported in Williamsburg area of Brooklyn. Other areas affected include Rockland County, Washington State, Michigan, New Jersey and California. The outbreak was also reported in Georgia, Maryland (Koenig, 2019) .

Measles is a virus that is transmitted when a person coughs and sneezes and the virus spreads into the air. The virus then lands on stones or land surfaces where it can stay for up to two hours. The virus is a highly contagious. Of note, measles is a human disease. It is not spread by any other human species. Previously, most children have had the measles vaccine given to them (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020) . However, over the last few years, the numbers of children immunized has also reduced. Being a highly contagious disease, if a person infected with the disease, about 90% surrounding such a person will be infected. The disease is characterized by cough, runny nose, high fevers and the measles rash (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020) .

An interesting drift on measles vaccination is that about 500,000 people are allergic to the vaccine. Some can also not tolerate the vaccine due to a weakened immune system. Therefore, there is a need for herd immunity. These people will largely benefit if other individuals are immunized. This immunization also protects the infants from the infection (Koenig, 2019) .
