A methodological approach is an outline of how research is conducted. The study employed “Using Clinical Signs of Neglect to Identify Elder Neglect Cases.  Journal of Elder Abuse & Neglect” by Friedman et al. (2017) employs a qualitative methodological approach. With this kind of approach, the authors take an exploratory approach to collect categorical data form the older adults who suffer neglect and then examining it to check the patterns of neglect within the phenomena. These patterns should even help the group of researchers to spot patterns within the phenomena even before doing the statistical analysis. The study design employed a lager multi center framework and a cohort study of victims of elder mistreatments.

The qualitative methodological approach in this study uses the Delphi process. The process involved multiple rounds, thus allowing changes to the scale. Using the Delphi method, the group of experts established and tested the scale employed as a pre-screener, which conceptually could be incorporated into the electronic health record systems so to enable identification of potential neglect cases among the elderly in an automated manner.

The study employed online surveys as data collection tools from the study population. These surveys allowed the elderly participants to answer questionnaires that gave the study the intended data. It also used a group of experts to review the clinical records of patients. They analyzed the contents of the interview using statistical analysis approaches.

The qualitative methodological approach used in this study helped the study acquire its exploratory aims. It perfectly helped the group to explore how the pre-screener, which conceptually could be incorporated into the electronic health record systems, could work in detecting neglect within the elderly.
