An article in the “Psychology Today” highlights the plight of military personnel when it comes to mental health. It begins by pointing out that the military life is thought to be stressful because of the structure its working conditions. Additionally, the violence, excessive control and separation from family and friends is thought to increase the chances of mental instability. The article further points out that soldiers are more adversely affected by mental health issues due the nature of their job. It is difficult for mental health to be prioritized at a time when other issues such as security threats and physical fitness are prioritized. Mental health screenings are also limited. The article concludes by highlighting some recommendations that could improve the mental health situation of the soldiers.

This article accurately describes the challenges surrounding the mental health care in the military. However, some of its recommendations are farfetched. For instance, stigma is a multifaceted social issue thus the idea of reducing it may take longer than anticipated. However, increasing screening is recommendable. This would help more service men get access to the help they need. It should be followed up by access to treatment. The recommendation to seek private treatment is critical in reducing the impact of the problem. However, the idea is bound to face some resistance due to the fact that, in the course of their treatment, the patients may be forced to disclose some confidential information which may make them appear vulnerable or even used against them . To overcome this challenge, the soldiers should be assured of confidentiality. Moreover, private treatment should be organized within the confines of the military avoid stigma. Remarkably, the author highlights suicide as serious health concern among the military men. Suicide requires a deeper commitment to implement a lasting solution. Apparently, this can only materialize if the military leadership involves the personnel, who have been identified as the greatest victims. A good start may involve organizing discussions between the personnel and the management to brainstorm on the best way forward in addressing the surrounding issues.
