Development goals are important for the development and growth of a company. Setting goals for the company requires the involvement of employees. There has to be a balance between the needs of a company and what employees can deliver. Employees are the center of the company and their job ambitions must be put in considerations as well. It is important for employees to feel motivated at all times. This way, employees are able to put in more effort in their work for the good of the company. A proper model must be in place in order to come up with appropriate development goals for the employee population ( Ranganathan, et al. 2017) . Development goals for a company must, therefore, include those goals set to motivate employees. A proper model used for setting the development goals for the employee population must consist of functional goals, underutilization goals and self- focused goals. Functional goals have high organizational value but low development value. Self- focused goals have low organizational value while the development value is quite high. Underutilization, on the other hand, are low on organizational value as well as development value.
It is important to include and balance all these goals while setting developmental goals as they all bear certain advantages. For instance, while functional goals have low development value, they are familiar to employees and allow employees to focus on important familiar tasks. Self-focused goals allow employees to take developmental risks for the company. According to Allen et al. (2016), w hen all these goals are put together, all the aspects of organization get to be satisfied. Motivated employees are able provide more effort in order to achieve the company’s set goals and objectives
