Early childhood teachers create a safe and comfortable environment for young children to master academic, social, motor, and adaptive skills. These educators also establish the groundwork for children to progress through education by forming partnerships with them. These partnerships help children learn critical social and emotional skills. When I think of the role early childhood teachers play in molding society’s youngest minds, I cannot help but admire their patience and commitment. These teachers require specific personal qualities that aid them in their duties.

Teachers in early childhood focus on childhood learning and developmental health. On the other hand, those teaching children between pre-kindergarten and third grade focus on teaching core subjects, including math, reading, social studies, and science. Educators also create a suitable environment for structured and unstructured play. Creating structure in the early childhood environment helps children learn routines and become comfortable expressing themselves. Subsequently, teachers also supervise these children to ensure safety. They discuss children’s behavior and development with parents and sometimes counsel parents (Schachter et al., 2016). Early childhood educators play a critical role in molding young children’s minds for higher-level education and societal roles.

An early childhood educator must love children for them to perform their job functions successfully. They also need to understand children’s needs and abilities and should have a passion for education. Moreover, early childhood teachers must be patient and caring. Patience is vital when establishing structure and teaching children routines. Teachers must also have compassion and exhibit flexibility. Having extensive knowledge about childhood development and content areas is also vital. These personal qualities are important for building positive relationships and developing supportive interactions. They also allow them to display warmth and create nurturing interactions (NAEYC, 2013). Additionally, they enable teachers to communicate a genuine interest in children’s activities and characteristics.
