Learning is the acquisition of knowledge through study, being taught or experience. The smarter every day video on learning to ride a bike backwards brings out various concepts regarding the learning theory. It demonstrates that having knowledge in something is not the same as understanding it. Understanding requires repetitive acquisition of skills in order to successively perform something. The Schmidt`s schema theory, therefore, comes out very clearly in this video as will be illustrated in the sections below.

The Schmidt`s schema concept stipulates that learning is as a result of the ability to acquire and keep in mind the general rules of practice, which enables a person to produce single or recurrent movements ( Mazur, 2016) . The general rules are acquired due to the stimulus condition producing the same expected actions after every trial. Eventually, a person is able to use these general rules in different environmental and situation context ( Mazur, 2016) . For one to be successful in learning according to this concept, they have to memorize the initial circumstances of movement, the parameters used in effort such as force, the sensory consequences of the practice and the actual outcome of the movement.

The video shows this theory where Destin, who had knowledge on riding an ordinary bike since childhood, is unable to ride a backward brain bicycle. Basically, the interchanged handlebar of bike required him to learn the new general rule regarding the movement, and engage the mind in concentrating on the new concept to succeed. This included knowing and memorizing the movement caused each time he used a specific handle to turn the bicycle. Ultimately, the persistent application of mind in utilizing the new rule enabled him to ride the bike.

It is very possible to speed up Destin`s process of learning to ride a bike backwards. In addition to the above theory, I would utilize the theory of reinforcement and knowledge of performance. The former would involve giving motivation in every attempt such that he mastered and repeated the correct movement ( Mazur, 2016) . The continuous motivation would increase his need to be more accurate. Use of the latter, on the other hand, would mean giving him all the necessary information regarding the expected results, and how to perform instead of leaving him to discover the rules himself.

In conclusion, it is clear that the Schmidt’s schema theory is clearly validated in the Smarter Every Day video. Essentially, learning of the general rule of every practice enables one to produce the desired behavior. Also, to accelerate learning in motor movements, one should incorporate other learning concepts. Consequently, learning is not only having knowledge about a practice, but also understanding how to utilize the same.
