Cultural values and practices are self-defining in matters concerning intercultural contact. Members of cultural minorities and majorities will always find several ways to maintain their cultural identities' positive distinctiveness ( Sussman, 2002 ). Adapting to another culture different from where one was born can pose various challenges. However, the greatest challenge in adapting to another culture is the aspect of communication. The link between culture and communication is diverse is usually concerned by the dynamics in the multicultural and acculturation world.

The importance of culture and communication in individuals' lives helps enhance cultural literacy and cultural competence. The communication process by which people acquire behavior and knowledge of different cultures is important to understand and fit in the values and beliefs of the various diverse cultures (Brown et al., 2016). The specific behavior that one needs to overcome the challenge of understanding other cultures is the psychological aspects of cultural transition. Behaviors such as having the right attitude to learn the key phrases of any culture are of importance. With the right attitude, one can appreciate the cultural differences and is then open to trying new ideologies.

In learning to adapt to a new culture, the greatest benefit is cultural literacy and competence. One might not appreciate the diversity of cultures until they travel to a different place with diverse cultures. The lack of awareness of other cultures makes one fail to understand the significances of interactions within a given cultural context ( Wang, 2011 ). Obtaining language codes and the background information of a population is essential in appreciating people's culture. Understanding the verbal and non-verbal cues in any cultural setting helps guarantee effective communication, which is necessary and plays a function in attaining and improving cultural competence.
