The contemporary society’s notion that music should be categorized under a one-size-fits-all classification because all songs have a melody, rhythm and use instruments to enhance aesthetic appeal is false, in my opinion. I do not think that “music is music” just because all songs have a style, form, culture, or period, which, supposedly, qualify them for grouping as a unified, single curriculum. The differentiation of music in variant listings is essential because the task above dictates band meeting discussions, presentation of songs, media reporting and criticism of albums, and venues that audiences congregate to listen to their fancied musicians. As such, I have a passionate preference for classical music because of its assorted benefits in comparison with other genres, such as popular jazz, hip-hop, or heavy metal that is revered by generation Z and millennials.
I fancy classical music for its health benefits, expressiveness, profoundness, and psychological depth that is yet to be accurately captured by popular music, which I loathe for its lack of aesthetic appeal, promotion of misconducts, such as drug abuse, laziness, and casual romantic relationships. Classical music, such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bach’s Air on the G String , and Mozart’s Symphony have an exquisite harmony, common modulation, and contrary motion that I cherish, and cannot be rivaled by any album by the Beatles or Madonna’s 4 Minutes . Whenever I listen to classical music, my emotional and cognitive abilities accentuate, enabling me to conduct my daily activities of living with ease ( Getz, 2015) . I have also noted that every time I play classical music for at least 30 minutes before sleeping, my sleep quality improves significantly. Furthermore, classical music is an effective intervention method to manage memory lapse in patients with dementia, and to treat blood pressure and depressive disorders. Thus, classical music will always be my preference because of the diverse advantages it proffers, which cannot be matched by the popular music genre.
