If you are looking for one of the best contemporary painters in America, then Tim Yanke is the name that comes up. As a contemporary artist, Tim and many of his likes have developed a different approach to artwork and painting. He has been quoted saying “there is life in movement, death in stagnation,” which means he wants the painting to come to life. Tim Yanke’s artwork can best be described as being spontaneous and lively, as well as being passionate, bold and innovative. He is a dynamic abstract artist from Detroit, United States. The artist’s approach to painting is to maintain spontaneity where he approaches every painting with the idea of making it continuously move and come to life.
I got a chance to interview Tim during one of his painting sessions and learning about his creative process. During this solo interview, I inquired about Tim’s artwork’s spontaneous charm to get an insight into the artist’s creative process. Inspired by legendary abstract painters such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Yanke has embraced the tenets of abreaction and impressionism that motivated him to become an artist. He creates vivid and textured paintings that build upon the impressionism foundations set by the predecessors.

Part of Yanke’s background includes a push by his parents to pursue artistic ink links. Yanke considers his artistic journey a personal one, but also an inspiration to most of his paintings. Recently, the artist has been incorporating wildlife into his artwork, even though he never considered himself a wildlife artist. His main area of specialization is Neo-West artwork where he collects Native American artifacts to use in his paintings. Yanke believes his creativity is renewed with each visit to locations in the Southwest such as New Mexico.
He is best known for abstract expressionist paintings that create a nostalgic effect on the viewers. According to Tim, as long as there is harmony between the top-bottom, and side to side, then he is sure of making something that can create an effect in the audience. The artist stated that his artwork is extremely organic as he seeks to make his painting come to life. The ultimate goal is for the audience to feel like they are staring directly with the painting regardless of the angle of viewing.
In addition to his artistic profile, Yanke sat down with the magazine for a question and answer session where he talked about musical and artistic influences of his career and how living in Detroit has contributed to his artistic work. In essence, a look at Yanke’s painting shows elements of music and Detroit grit. “Music drives the passion of my paintings,” he says during the interview.
I inquired whether his artwork is instinctual or it just comes out when he is creating. Being an abstract painter, Yanke believes his creative process is organic. This means when thinking about creating an abstract, colors just come out into his head and from there he starts to see an image forming. Tim Yanke’s artwork continues to evolve and captivate viewers all over the world. The audience will be captivated by a variety of media that causes them to ponder his messages and find their meanings. Some of the artist’s works include the description of dragonfly imagery and his representations of the US flag which he calls Yanke Doodles.
The American Frag painting is made with ink on a canvas with pastels, graphite and chalk. The artist approached this artwork with an idea in mind before putting it on paper. It was inspired by the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and was the first thing he did after the attacks. He uses a variety of colors to represent different cultures and religions making up the melting point of America. Tim Yanke's artwork involves the use of colors and Southwestern culture to create bold, rhythmic and compelling art. His paintings are mostly influenced by Southwest American culture due to his fascination with this part of the country. It reminds him of his late sister and uses this love and passion to create fascinating artistic work.
Secondly, the Dragonfly Doodle by Tim Yanke was done in 2012 which was inspired by a Tiffany leaded antique lamp with dragonfly that his mother acquired in his childhood. The lamp left a lasting impression and motivated him to make the painting. He painted this artwork with emotion as the lamp was something dear to him. It invokes nostalgia in him and the same impact can be felt by the audience. Everyone who views his artwork can see through Yanke’s life as an artist and a person with his passion for the family being an important part of Yanke’s philosophy as an artist.
