The book titled, ‘My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay’ is about four best friends in grade one. Despite their different backgrounds, they complement each other in a school setting. Zulay is blind and is terrified even to leave her classroom because of the inability to move around. Zulay experiences some social and emotional challenges as she has not mastered her movement around the school compound as she has the classroom. Despite being blind, Zulay is good in Math and helps her friend to get the concept. When there school field day is announced, Zulay says she want to participate in the race which she eventually wins at the end of the book (Best & Brantley-Newton, 2015) . Being in a class with children with normal vision, Zulay encounters a challenge to read which is overcome when she masters using a brail and reading with her fingers. She indicates that reading was as a hard as swimming as she could only sink before she learned how to use her hands.
The book stirs out the word disability in children of a young age who might not have interacted with the blind people. Zulays engagement in activities similar to theirs enables them to understand that being disabled in any way does not make anyone different thus nurturing a sense accommodativeness and inclusivity in the schools. The story demonstrates the support Miss Turner offers to Zulay to ensure that she beats the fear of leaving the class and participate in the race as she desires by learning how to use her cane.
