Before this module, I knew about Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis, which is a method of defining human behavior and treating mental illness. Based on the general understanding of Freud theory, I had an impression that childhood of an individual has a huge impact on shaping the personality of adults. I agreed with the notion of talk therapy given by Freud i.e., simply discussion about a problem provides some degree of relief to people (Cherry, 2018).
Additionally, I understood the concept of the iceberg and three major parts of a human mind, i.e. the conscious mind, subconscious mind, and the unconscious mind. Freud proposed that the conscious mind is the tip of an iceberg, whereas the subconscious and unconscious mind are like its submerged part. According to Freud, the unconscious mind influences human behavior (Cherry, 2018). Furthermore, I agreed with Freud’s division of human personality into id, ego, and superego. The id is an unconscious part of personality and it defines the basic instincts. The ego supports id in a realistic and socially acceptable way, whereas superego is based on moral standards.
However, after this module, I have learned that the basic personality of an individual is not only based on Freud’s division. Other theories of personality such as trait theory and socio-psychological theory reflect on human personality from different perspectives. The humanistic approach and social cognitive perspective also help in better understanding mental processes and human behaviors. Likewise, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator presents different measures for assessing the personality of an individual.
Therefore, it is inferred that Freud only presented the one view of personality. However, other perspectives of personality such as trait and humanistic perspective provide a different lens to understand human behavior. Overall, the module enhanced my knowledge of psychology.
