What is NDNQI?

The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators is the only functioning national nursing database that provides quality annually and quarterly unit-specific nursing care data from an estimated 2000 U.S. and International hospitals. The database demonstrates outcomes of linkages between patients and the nursing staff at the unit care. In addition, the member hospitals of NDNQI largely benefit from consistent reporting of the nurses quality performance besides performance comparison incentives that not only provides a national benchmark but is also helpful in improvement of service quality ( Garrard, et al., 2016 ). The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators study of patient fall was conducted by one Simon (2013), to evaluate the fall classifications in the U.S. hospitals. The examined study of fall reliability was classified into sensitive and specific grades including the probable mean average. In effect of Simon’s findings, the National Quality Forum (NQF) approved the NDNQI illustration of patients’ fall providing a standardized definition and methodology in reporting and measuring injury fall cases.

How was the NDNQI used in the study by Garrard et al., (2016)?

Garrard et al, (2016) specific aims was to explore the validity and reliability of the NDNQI definition of injury falls as per NQF measurements. The particular study purposes aimed at assessing the uniformity in the fall injury scenarios and the precision of accurate injury level assignment. The design of the study required every participating member hospital to have a NDNQI site coordinator whose crucial role was to ensure that all information collected followed the NDNQI guidelines.

What is the primary key for the Patient table?

According to Garrard et al. (2016 ), the primary key of the patients table comprised of five injury levels adhering to the NDNQI definitions of different fall scenarios. The survey included coded options whereby each respondent selected one describing the injury level. The analysis was set by experts hence each scenario was gold standard. The coded responses included 1 “none”, 2 “minor”, 3 “moderate”, 4” major” and 5 “death”.

What is the foreign key for the Patient table?

The coded responses defined different levels of injury as perceived by the respondents, none- meant the patient had no injury signs or symptoms. Minor- injuries resulted in topical medication or dressing, Moderate- injuries involved splinting or muscle strain, Major- Injuries resulted in surgeries or prescription of blood products finally Death- the patients succumbed to injuries sustained from a fall ( Garrard, et al., 2016 ).

What is the primary key for the Fall table?

The fall scenarios were summarized into two descriptions one as exactly correct in percentage and the other correct within one injury level also in percentage.

What is the relationship between the Fall and the Patient table?

The correlation between the fall and patients table emphasizes on the reliability and validity of the scenarios in assessment. As per Garrard et al. (2016 ), the study indicated an excellent consistency in the classification of injury levels among the respondents
