Cybercrime is perhaps one of the most serious national security issues in the future. Cybercrime describes unlawful acts of crime where the computer plays a role, is the target, or both. Examples of computer uses include cyberstalking, financial crimes, cyber defamation, sale of illegal articles, forgery, pornography, email spoofing, online gambling, and intellectual property crime. When the computer is used to conduct unlawful acts, it is described as cybercrime. Most of the countries essential infrastructures such as health systems, financial systems, and power grid are run through networks connected to the internet ( Taylor et al., 2018) . Although the internet is largely empowering, it has become extremely dangerous and has exposed the country to vulnerabilities that did not exist before. The paper will evaluate cyber-crime; provide two solutions, and the role of the three arms of the federal government regarding the issue.

Solutions

The first solution would be improving companies' security strategy. Firms should focus on improving their security from the inside out more than from the outside in because focusing from the outside in leaves critical aspects of the company vulnerable. The company should focus on improving its security controls at the application level before evolving outwards to the point of access. The other option would be developing monitoring infrastructure. When a country lacks a central monitoring system, it is highly likely that organizations would be left vulnerable ( Prasad, 2017) . Russian and Iranian cybercrime on the US has increased over the past decade and monitoring their points of access would be critical.

Recommendation

Neither of the two solutions can work independently of the other. The most preferred solution should be a combination of the two solutions. There should a central database that can monitor data and advice organizations on the best techniques for protecting information. When all internet platforms have monitoring techniques, it will be easier to protect sensitive information. Also, organizations should consolidate their security into fewer platforms ( Taylor et al., 2018) . Having fewer platforms will allow the company to channel their security into one effective platform rather than focusing on many platforms and causing their systems to be vulnerable. The answer to the cybercrime menace is a collaboration between the government, industry, and consumers.

Role of the Federal Government

All the three arms of the federal government must work in collaboration because working independently will be less effective. The federal government has five agencies concerned with fighting cybercrime: National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), US Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Trade Commission. They monitor cybercrime on a national level. State governments create multiagency groups to tackle cybercrime ( Prasad, 2017) . For instance, Arizona created the Cyber threat Response Alliance to analyze the emerging and real threats from cyber insecurity. On the other hand, local governments have a key role in forming agencies that focus on cybercrime at the local level. Furthermore, it should work with the other two arms to monitor and coordinate response to cybercrime at the local level. Also, they have a role of education and training communities and public sector employees regarding cybercrime.

Conclusion

The paper evaluates cyber-crime; provides two solutions, and the role of the three arms of the federal government regarding the issue. The country is facing serious threats from cybercrime and the government should respond through increased investments in cybersecurity and training. If the government does not respond promptly, cybercriminals may go beyond stealing sensitive information and may start attacking grid lines and plunging cities into darkness ( Taylor et al., 2018) . They may even go further and cause air traffic control systems to shut down thus disrupting flights. The government should play a bigger role in fighting cybercrime.
