Inadequate sleep has adverse implications among teenagers. First, lack of enough sleep causes concentration difficulties during class time. Teens who have an inadequate sleep lose the ability to capture what they are taught in class because their mental status is not ready to absorb new concepts. Lack of sleep also causes memory impairment among teenagers. Teenagers who have fewer sleep hours experience memory loss because memory takes less time to grow (Troxel, 2017). Thus, teenagers should have enough time for memory reset and growth through having enough sleep. For example, sleep scientists reveal that teenagers should sleep at least eight hours a day.

Besides, inadequate sleep reduces academic performance among teenagers. Research shows that American teenagers who perform poorly in academics do not have enough sleep time (Troxel, 2017). Poor academic performance is linked with lack of enough sleep because students who have inadequate sleep time do not concentrate during class lessons thus do not capture concepts taught in class. Inadequate sleep also increases sick occasions among teenagers due to tiredness and the inability of the brain to perform its function well (Troxel, 2017). Lastly, inadequate sleep among teenagers can lead to depression due to the inability of the brain to concentrate on one activity. Therefore, teens who do not have enough sleep tend to experience periods of mood swings and loss of interest in certain activities. Since inadequate sleep has more adverse effects on teenagers, it is important to give teens enough time for sleep.

School start should not be pushed back. Most school in America starts time at 8:30 am. The school start time should remain intact to enable teenagers attending morning lessons to have enough sleep time. Allocating enough sleep time for teens can help overcome the adverse implications of sleep recorded among American teens.
