The research question is how imitation and motor deficiencies can be corrected to help individuals with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). It is interesting because it is now possible to give aid to individuals with motor dysfunction common in both conditions. The hypothesis tested is on whether motor and imitation deficiencies can be studied and otherwise corrected to better the quality of life for persons living with ASD and ADHD. All of the sixty-six participants were aged between 6-13 years with an IQ greater than eighty. ASD and ADHD diagnoses were conducted using the diagnostic observation schedule and algorithms to incorporate subjects that met the desired criteria.

The procedure used was videotaping motor performance throughout a given assessment. Verbal instructions were often used, followed by demonstrations on how to complete the required tasks. The WISC-III and IV were often used to assess the cognitive capabilities of the participants. The Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices was incorporated to help in obtaining an updated IQ score after testing a subject. The results obtained showed no significant difference when it came to classifications by age. ASD patients performed well when it came to the static balance, whereas ADHD patients aced the dynamic balance assessment. Therefore, correlations between imitation abilities and intelligence were mostly negligible. The critical implications emanating from the results show that ASD and ADHD patients can be helped because there are no major discrepancies in basic motor dysfunction and imitation impairment. Assessment of motor and imitation deficiencies was thus made possible by the research. It translates to the utilization of the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment and imitation possibilities to correct the said conditions. As it turns out, the overlapping nature of motor and imitation deficiencies brings the concept of correcting neurodevelopmental disorders into action.
