Diet and exercise is the section of the lecture that I found to be interesting. It is stated that exercising helps to burn the fats around the heart muscle thereby promoting its effective functioning. It is evident that the type of food we eat and the physical patterns determines our health. Engaging in regular physical activity is important for a healthy life. People who are inactive physically are at a higher risk of developing coronary heart diseases than those who are physically active (Evans, 2004). Therefore, it is evident that poor diet and lack of physical activity increases the risk of a person developing high cholesterol level, which may contribute to various heart diseases.

I have learnt that regular exercise and eating a balanced diet can assist a person to obtain the required nutrients and calories to provide energy needed to carry out the daily activities. Eating a well-balanced diet involves eating the correct foods types at the accurate time of the day. As I read the notes, I discovered the types of foods that provide us with most energy and those that have negative impacts on our health. I learnt that eating foods with too much calories have negative effects on our health. For instance, a healthy diet involves focusing on making breakfast part of my routine. In addition, selecting foods with different vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, lean protein sources, and complex carbohydrates. Increased consumption of vegetables and fruits is related with minimal cases of various chronic diseases like some cancers and cardiovascular disease. Moreover, it is recommended that people should only consume healthy workout snacks (Swift et al., 2018). Therefore, having the correct balance of protein, carbohydrates and other nutrients can assist in promoting healthy living.

Poor nutrition and physical inactivity is a burden because it contributes to increasing rates of diseases and death resulting from chronic illnesses. Moreover, physical inactivity and poor nutrition contributes to disabilities resulting from diseases such as stroke, obesity, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Evidence reveal that many people do not eat adequate vegetables and fruits. Most of them tend to eat foods containing too much saturated fats, which impacts adversely on their health. Consumption of low vegetable and fruit and intake of high saturated fat is linked with diabetes, some type of cancers, and heart diseases. Physical activity and proper nutrition would contribute significantly towards addressing the increasing rates of diseases associated with these factors (Reis et al., 2016). The public health solution that I would propose to promote eating of a well-balanced diet and engaging in regular exercise include community-based programs. These programs can utilize different approaches to offer people with the necessary attitudes, skills, and knowledge to be active physically and to eat healthy diet. Additionally, the programs can carry out assessments in the community to identify the exercise and dietary habits of the populations and determine the most effective interventions that might contribute towards improving these habits. Moreover, these programs can educate the people regarding the significance of a healthy diet and being physically active. For example, the programs can educate the people to make healthy food choices in different areas including in cafeterias, fast-food outlets, restaurants and when cooking at home. They should ensure their food choices as low in sugar, sodium, and fat. Consequently, these programs can focus on community-wide campaigns to promote awareness regarding the importance of proper nutrition and being physically active. The campaigns can be carried out through diverse media including mailings, billboards, television, movie theaters, radio, and newspapers among others. The health promotion messages should be communicated in a specific way as possible to enhance understanding of the populations. For instance, the terms such as “moderate physical activity” and “a healthy diet” should be defined and explained in simple terms so that all categories of people in the community gets to understand the concepts thereby promoting healthy living (Reis et al., 2016).
