In the US, various proportions of society possess relatively more vulnerability aspects as compared to the majority populace. Ideally, there are two major groups of vulnerable individuals situated in the US; Heroin addicts and undocumented individuals. Based on my classmates’ presentations on the two groups aforementioned, this assignment purposes to delaminate some of the new concepts I acquired about these two groups of vulnerable individuals.

First, I learnt that by the end of the year 2017, there were over 10.5 million undocumented immigrants in the US. Essentially, contrary to popular belief, the Mexican immigrant populace which takes up the majority of the US immigrants took radically declined within the same year (Flores, 2018) . It is worth noting that this decline could have been caused by President Donald Trump’s stringent measures in curtailing the imminent immigration into the US. The president accused the immigrants of taking up majority of US jobs and subsequently contributing to the drug menace in the US.

While large hordes of immigrants stream the US every year, it is worth noting that there are some states that possess a higher concentration of these immigrants as compared to the rest of the states making up the US. Ideally, these states take up about 57% of the total immigrant populace. The related states are California, Texas, New York, Florida, New Jersey and Illinois ( Flores, 2018) . Illegal Immigrants further face numerous legislative barriers within the US owing to lack of licensure and insurance. In the event of an illness, the individuals who make up the illegal immigrant spectrum seek care in local healthcare centers that only offer primary healthcare leaving them at the mercy of well-wishers. Ideally, federal law in the US stipulates that patients must be screened owing to Medicaid coverage aspects.

The second most conspicuous group I learnt about was the heroin addicts in the Osceola community. Ideally, heroin falls into a category of drugs known as opioids and is obtained naturally from a plant known as opium poppy. Naturally, it occurs as a whitish powder. It is worth noting that the brain possesses receptors for opioids that are involved in majority olfactory functions in the body associated with touch, pain, emotion and even reward ( Smotherman, 2019) . The imminent effect advanced by Heroin is a sudden surge on the neurotransmitter Dopamine that is structurally designed to “want more” and as a result creates an addictive feeling.

Individuals hooked to Heroin are part of a larger group of drug users. Based on surveys by the Pew Research centers, majority of heroin users are previous or current users of cigarettes, alcohol and even Marijuana ( Smotherman, 2019) . I also realized that majority of the users between the ages 15-18 began as a result of peer pressure, the need to feel “high” and the subsequent need to “fit in” to a certain group. Others claim that the intrinsic desire to feel the effects of the drug sparked their need to engage in drug abuse.

In a bid to curtail the dangers of heroin addiction, Osceola communities can engage in various levels of healthcare: primary, secondary and tertiary. Conclusively, the Mexican immigrant populace which takes up the majority of the US immigrants took radically declined within the same year. Additionally, majority of heroin users are previous or current users of cigarettes, alcohol and even Marijuana. I also realized that majority of the users between the ages 15-18 began as a result of peer pressure, the need to feel “high” and the subsequent need to “fit in” to a certain group for the fear of losing acquaintance.
