Being a general manager in an organization is usually not an easy task; thus, managers need to acquire unique qualities to excel in their position. In the article “5 essential skills of successful hotel general managers,” Westfall (2017) notes that managers should develop leadership skills by acting as an example to their junior workers. They should have a visible viewpoint, being humble and hardworking. They should have the ability to put themselves into the guest experience to acquire valuable insights and be good leaders by working together with their junior workers. Westfall states that general managers should have the ability to communicate their expectations to their employees in all departments and set a high tone both in employees’ performance and services. Setting expectations will enable them to promote a culture of professionalism and ensure that workers are highly valued. Additionally, the author asserts that general managers should develop the ability to recognize and reward better attainments and always push for improvements. They should understand their competitors, remain at the of organizational trends, and always be innovative.
An article by American InterContinental University (2020) emphasizes that managers should have the ability to instruct their teams in case there is a need for change or problem within their departments. They should have the ability to set directions, objectives and communicate new procedures, goods and services, and internal policies. Additionally, the authors state that managers should understand when to improve their support to their employees and regulate any arising conflicts between the workers. Moreover, managers should develop the skills of controlling their workers' performance, work quality, reliability, and efficacy. They should ensure that all departments are organized and ensuring workers are well suited for their jobs, and ensure that everything and everybody is contained in their work.
