Pablo Picasso was a revolutionary artist who introduced the concept of deconstructing forms of individuals or objects before piecing them together in an angular, two-dimension form as paintings or sculptures. Picasso founded the Cubist movement where objects or subjects of paintings or sculptures are first broken into various pieces then re-arranged to create an abstract form, as evidenced in The Old Guitarist painting of 1903 ( Pablopicasso.org., n.d.) . The image shows an older man playing the guitar in a distorted manner, with the subject’s upper torso painted in a reclining style and the bottom legs being crossed, representing Cubism. The Old Guitarist is also a perfect embodiment of El Graco’s works. The Old Guitarist shows a sightless man holding a brown guitar close to his body, with the brown color being the only change in color of the entire painting, a perfect embodiment of Cubism. Upon further examination, the painting has a ghostly image in the background of a woman whose head appears to be looking left and extending an outstretched arm ( Pablopicasso.org, n.d.) . The woman in a seating position may mean that Picasso had intended to draw an upset, seated woman but instead chose to paint The Old Guitarist .
According to Kelly Richman-Abdou’s article Evolution of Picasso’s Iconic Self-Portraits from Age 15 to 90 posted on Modernmet.com, Pablo Picasso did not stick to Cubism as he advanced in age. Instead, the artist experimented with various drawing, painting, and sculpturing styles, as evidenced in the pictures of Picasso’s artworks from different times. Picasso continues to evolve as he ages, a fact I find fascinating ( Richman-Abdou, 2020) . However, I prefer Cubism because it allows the artist to deconstruct objects or subjects before representing them on paintings using monochromatic hues. I plan to use Picasso’s Cubism style to draw my artworks comprising items from my surrounding. I will use pencil drawings to complete my piece of art.
