There exist numerous variations on how parents can raise their children. Although each parent will raise their child differently, there exist many common features in raising children from one parent to another. These commonalities can be grouped into four distinct types of parenting style, authoritarian, indulgent, neglectful and authoritative styles. These styles are a combination of the various strategies that parents will use when raising their children. It is important to understand these parenting styles as they impact children significantly. Jada Pinkett talks about parenting with her mother and children giving us a glimpse into the parenting style she uses and that which her mother used while raising her.

Authoritarian parents are those who use disciplinarian strategies when raising their children. These parents make use of a strict discipline style and rarely negotiate with their children. They are famous for maintaining a one-way communication style with their children and hardly explaining their rules to the children. They are quick to punish children who disobey and are less nurturing and have very high expectations of their children which they expect them to meet. A good example of such a parent is one who believes that their children should only be seen and not heard and rarely take into consideration their children's feelings.

Authoritative parents are nurturing, reasonable and set high but clear standards for their children. Parents frequently communicate with the children and ensure appropriate communication transpires between them. Children of such parents take part in setting goals that they must achieve. They also understand the goals set for them because their parents use language that is easily understandable to them. Parents who use this style are also nurturing to their children. An example of such a parent is one who enforces rules and gives consequences while also considering the child's feelings on the matter.

Indulgent parenting is another style of parenting where the parents are not strict and allow their children to do as they please. These parents will offer limited guidance and directions to their children and are often seen as friends with the children rather than taking up the parenting role. Parents using this strategy will let their children figure out their problems, have open communication with children and are also warm and nurturing to them. These children often have little to no expectations set for them. Such a parent would be one who sets rules, does not give the consequences and does not bother to enforce them.

Neglectful parenting is another strategy where the parents are uninvolved in the child's life. These parents will allow children to have a lot of freedom and give them no guidance. They offer little nurturing to the child and will have limited communication with them. They also set few if any expectations for their child and leave them to their devices. An example of such a parent would be one who does not devote their time into meeting the basic needs of their child.

Looking at Jada Pinkett Smith's parenting style, it is evident that she cares for her children. However, she practices an indulgent parenting style as evidenced by the fact that she says she allows her children to be opinionated and have a say on their lives even from as early as eight years old. She states that she wanted to prepare the children for life, thus explaining her parenting style. Jada allowed her son the freedom to live on his own at the age of 15 to allow him to experience life. Although he might have been financially stable, he should have stayed at home a bit longer for him to be nurtured more and receive more guidance from his parents.

Jada's mother explains that when raising her, she did not give Jada a lot of choices. She explains that she would give the rules and expect that they would be followed. She states that she "owned" her because she was her child. I believe that her mother was an authoritarian parent because she also explains that Jada and Will Smith had to break her into their parenting style to ensure she understood how they were raising their children with a lot of freedom.
