“ People are what they consume!” According to Bowers (2014), this phrase dates back to 1800s; however, it has taken centuries of studies from then to establish precisely what people ought to consume so as to be as fit as thinkable. Nutrients are vital for normal functioning of the body and reducing health problem. Besides boosting mood and energy as well as enhancing the overall quality of life, nutrients are essential in preventing chronic ailments such as cancer, heart diseases, and diabetes. The human body uses different nutrients for various purposes. For nutrients to function properly one must consume a balanced diet which includes mainly protein, lipids, carbohydrates, and minerals and vitamins.
Protein makes up the structural part of the body such as, skeleton and supporting tissue of the body, skin, and epithelia. They act as protective mechanisms such as mucin, turnover keratin, skin and in the cellular and humoral immune response. In addition, they help in transport and communication for example, plasma protein, hormones and cell membrane receptors (Bowers, 2014).

Lipids warrant that the body stores energy for an extended period. They are necessary for physiological and metabolic processes as well as to keep the functional and structural integrity of all cell membranes. Lipids are kept in adipose tissue to safeguard and offer insulation to internal organs (Bowers, 2014).
Carbohydrates provide energy to the muscles during strenuous activities. Complex carbohydrates include whole grain bread and cereals which provide energy for longer periods while simple carbohydrates such as sugars, honey, and some fruits are broken down faster to provide the daily energy required by the body.
Minerals and vitamins are essential for life and normal body functioning. Minerals such as calcium, zinc, and iron, and also vitamins are essential for healthy teeth, bone skin vision, nervous system, blood tissue and blood vessels (Bowers, 2014).
The human body uses different nutrients for a different purpose. Therefore, it is important to provide all the above nutrients as it will prevent health problems such as chronic diseases for example heart attack, cancer, and diabetes. For instance, lean proteins, grains, and fruits and vegetables offer an ideal balanced diet rich in proteins and carbohydrates not forgetting vitamins and minerals necessary in every day’s life. As per Bowers (2014), Americans have been found to overeat proteins. Therefore, such a combination coupled with a glass of water to every meal can help many individuals to remain hydrated and avoid over-eating.
