Accreditation refers to the existing voluntary programs run by non-governmental institutions and involves the evaluation of the healthcare institutions on their compliance with the minimum operating requirements and further compare their performance with specific set standards. According to a study by Alkhenizan and Shaw (2011), evidence exist which proves that accreditation brings about improvement in healthcare provision. Accredited healthcare facilities work under a tested blueprint which has been evaluated through accreditation and thus giving them quality results. All accredited hospitals are required to follow set standards in their daily execution of duties and service provision. An analysis of Medicare information was conducted to make comparisons between accredited and non-accredited hospitals. The analysis proved that accredited hospitals tend to succeed in saving more lives and report a few mortality rate cases suggesting accreditation contributes to good quality.

Every area of specialization in healthcare provision offers services in a unique way. It then follows that the accreditation bodies must set specific standards of accreditation for each and every single specialty. Notably, the standards developed by accredited nursing homes do not apply for an Eye Care Center. The differences between these areas of specialization are characterized by their various job description and work missions. For example, a children hospital seeks to provide general healthcare for infants and toddlers while a visual care center aims to offer eye care solutions. The difference in apparatus and procedures used means that standards of accreditation must also differ (Jha, 2018).

The members of the public possess a positive thought about accreditation and believe that accreditation brings about improved quality of healthcare. Available Medicare information indicates that the public more prefers accredited medical institutions by over and above non-accredited hospitals. The preference for accredited hospitals is proof that the general public believes that accredited hospitals offer more quality services than non-accredited ones.
