The cumulative experiences I have learned in class and during my reflection period have enabled me in defining my personal philosophy in nursing. There are fundamental aspects that have guided me in formulating my philosophy. There will be a revelation of who I am and the nursing experience that changed my perspective in nursing. The definition of nursing, its significance to me personally, and what influenced my definition, will be addressed in my philosophy. My beliefs, values, and ethical principles in nursing practice are also explained. The domains of my nursing philosophy ranging from personal-recipient care, health to the patient, and myself as well as the conducive environment, are discussed in the philosophy. Finally, my personal philosophy in nursing will reveal my vision in nursing and healthcare, the possible challenges a nurse can face, and my professional nursing goals.
I am an international student, and having a chance to study in the United States has been of great importance in my nursing career. My primary concern as a nurse is to ensure that my patients are taken care of by being compassionate and supportive of them. My experiences during reflection at the nursing facility completely transformed me professionally as a nurse. Those experiences of showing compassion and being supportive of seriously ill patient led to the development of my personal philosophy in nursing practice. I had an opportunity to come across a patient who had been diagnosed with cancer during that time. The patient, together with the family members, had given up as the situation was getting worse with time. I recall them telling me that they had wasted their resources trying to save their relative, but all was in vain. I finally gave them hope and promised to take care of their relative during the hospitalization period. I had taken up the whole responsibility of ensuring the well-being of this cancer patient. I had to attend to him whenever called upon, ensured that he had taken his drugs and motivated him that all was going to be okay if only he could do what I was instructing him. I also provided his physical needs and wants to. Within a short period, he had responded positively to the treatment and was later discharged. I was so proud of myself, and this made to love my nursing career as this experience brought greater satisfaction to my patient and me. Such an experience to recall helped me to have a different dimension of what nursing was and what it signified to me.

Nursing, to me, is an act of kindness extended to the patient. This to me, signifies the opportunity to safeguard and care for the life of my patients. The caring contribution of nurses should result in the satisfaction of patients as this is a specific type of profession that involves human-to-human contact (Pajnkihar, Stiglic & Vrbnjak, 2012). Those factors include embrace, inspire, trust, nurture, forgive, balance to mention but a few. These factors have become my essential references in my career as they guide me to understand what nursing entails. In order to realize this, there are various personal beliefs, values, and ethical principles that need to be adhered to.
I believe in the well-being of all humans, and this is illustrated in my personal philosophy. This has been the driving force in my nursing career. The whole responsibility of a nurse is to foster the health of the patient based on the informed decision made (Selanders & Crane, 2012). I want to ensure that I always do my best to safeguard the health of my patients by applying my potential capabilities and knowledge learned and acquired. I sometimes imagine going through the unbearable pain that the patients undergo and I feel sorry for them. Communication with the patients, either verbally, non-verbally, or just listening, should always show warmth and understanding. Therefore, how a nurse views a patient in various dimensions matters a lot.
I view patients as my associates in my career. Therefore, there is a need to have a mutual relationship with them. Effective communication with my patients fosters a clear understanding of their health problems and how best I can handle. This is true, as suggested in Watson theory that for us to be able to care for ourselves, we must take care of others. Health to the person means the total condition of well-being. This is the condition whereby there are free from diseases, stress, and they feel more comfortable. They must be fully satisfied with my nursing services and be appreciative at the end. Health, to me, is the opportunity to impact the life of the patient positively. There should be promotion and acceptance of both the negative and positive views from both sides, that is, the service provider and the service recipient. This entails monitoring their response to treatment and safeguarding their personal interests to ensure balance in their soul, body, and mind (Andersson et al. 2015). Considering the environment, I have to understand the basic information of the person, the emotional challenges they face when in a particular state, and what exactly they have gone through. The environment should offer the patient a chance to choose the best alternative available to them concerning the treatment. These interactions with the patients build a bond of help- trust relationship between us; thus, an enabling environment for treatment is created. This will result in the formulation of my vision for nursing and healthcare aimed at improving nursing service to be delivered. The challenges nurses may encounter, and my professional goals in nursing are also outlined.
My vision for nursing is quality and affordable healthcare services to all patients. This will be evident through the realization of improved quality care for all patients regardless of their socioeconomic status they bear. Partnering with the government will be vital. Promotion of pertinent education to aspiring nurses to equip them with appropriate knowledge and technical skills required. There are challenges that are prone to be faced as a nurse. Lack of adequate and developed medical facilities that will hinder the quality of healthcare services from being delivered. Hostility in some working environment that is unbearable and prevents nurses from working in such places. Lack of communication is another challenge to be experienced as this will limit the spirit of teamwork among employees. Conflicts and disagreements in organizations will, therefore, limit the efficient operations of the organizations hence reduced overall performance. There is the negligence of duties by fellow nurses who view nursing as an overstressing and a more demanding career. It is, therefore, necessary that such challenges are addressed as soon as possible before their adverse effects on the whole nations are felt. My main goal in nursing is to leave a positive social stature in this field. I want to be admired and hailed as a hero for the many accomplishments and transformations that I desire to achieve in the healthcare field. Patients should remember me for caring and supporting them even in worse situations. A nursing facility that will both take care of patients and educate aspiring nurses should be set up in my name. The impact will be noticed not only at my workplace but also across the nation as people will consider me an instrument of change in the healthcare sector.
Conclusively, the nursing experiences I had led to the formulation of my personal philosophy in nursing practice. The main elements that form part of any nursing philosophy should advocate for the caring of patients. The philosophy should also reveal what nursing entails and its significance. It should have beliefs, values, and ethical principles to guide nurses and also include the various domains of the nursing philosophy. The vision, challenges likely to be faced, and the professional goals of any nurse should be outlined clearly in the personal philosophy.
