Effects of Social Media on Our Lives
The evolution of social media over the years has always intrigued me. To think that there was a time where the only social networking platform I knew was instant messaging is mind-boggling. Now, there are so many platforms the most popular ones being Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Facebook alone has over 1.65 billion active monthly users, and the numbers keep increasing day by day. I want to think that the internet has made my life easier and has broadened my connections, but this is not the case when I consider my professional and social life. Social media has helped me discover amazing educational materials enabling me to come up with different content that shares valuable information. The various platforms have been of great help to many people looking to market themselves and their work. Moreover, I recently found out social media brought out my creative side, as I now publish more creative content in the form of pictures and short videos than I used to in previous years.
I have also found social media very helpful in my social campaigns. In my free time, I volunteer at a local non-profit organization, and my role as a social media campaign activist gives me a sense of fulfillment. Helping people with disabilities and people from less advantageous backgrounds through social media campaigns uplifts my spirit every time. I also find social media very helpful whenever I need help with a particular issue. By sharing my problems and interests on social media, I find it easy to connect with people that share them with me, and in this way, I always find help to my most pressing problems. Despite its numerous positive effects on our lives, social media has its disadvantages too. I don't come from a very well off background, and seeing different people on social media having the time of their lives has always dulled my mood, sometimes getting me into a somewhat state of depression.

Besides, social media also gives people a wrong sense of belonging, deceiving them that they belong to a specific group or movement when they don't. The most significant effect social media had on me was an addiction. It took me several years to battle the addiction, and luckily, I managed to recover from this illness. I would spend almost an entire day being active on social media, and my grades started to deteriorate. Were it not for my guidance counselor who helped me through this challenging time, I would still be addicted. In conclusion, I view social media as an excellent tool for people to form and build strong social connections. Also, the fact that it has some adverse effects should not be taken lightly, and awareness should be created to protect children and teenagers from these harmful effects.
