Personnel and Organizational Psychology
There are various barriers to organizational communication that lead to strained linkages within organizations. The first barrier is noise, whereby some employees within an organization do not uphold silence within their workstations, interrupting others. In the virtual organizational environment, noise could hinder effective communication between various stakeholders (Rice University, 2019). For instance, a manager based within a factory could find it difficult to communicate with their employees and other stakeholders due to the noise originating from the machines. Semantic problems are also key barriers to effective communication in the virtual business environment. Transmission and expression of the intended meaning could be distorted due to semantics. Cultural differences also present a huge barrier to communication whereby some employees are skeptical in using some words, symbols, colors, phrases, or actions. Other barriers to effective communication are wrong assumptions, selective perceptions, and emotions.
Mangers have a critical role to play in the elimination of the communication barriers within their organizations. Managers must first encourage the application of simple language in their jurisdictions. Managers can also implement simple organizational structures whereby the communication channels are clearly defined. Effective media selection by the managers could also be essential in eliminating some barriers to communication (Rice University, 2019). Managers could also hold training on cultural awareness to ensure that all their employees are conversant with the various cultures represented within their organizations. Managers can also use employee orientations to ensure a good understanding of the right communication channels within the organization.

Organizations may use both internal and external communication channels to ensure effective interactions. In upholding good internal communications, organizations should use video conferencing software that enables them to provide real-time information to all the intended stakeholders. Emails could also be essential in passing crucial information within organizations (University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing, 2010). The use of memos and other document-sharing applications could also ensure that organizations uphold effective communication. Private messaging applications and internal podcasts are also essential internal communications channels that managers can use in overcoming communication barriers.
