The main activity in the foster care system is the adoption of siblings and the need to place two brothers together to enhance the family bond. The foster care unit contributes significantly to the well-being of siblings by creating a connection between siblings. Statistically, more than two-thirds of the children in the United States in the foster care programs have at least one sibling under care too. Placing siblings separately in foster care is equally regarded as a loss and extra punishment since the siblings feel that their bonds have been broken.

The decision to place kids up for adoption happened as a result desire to help out siblings who are not able to survive in their own families either due to violence, neglect, or abuse. The foster care system takes charge of siblings’ relationships because they can effectively provide care and support, which is otherwise not provided by the birth parents. Most importantly, in any instance of adopting siblings in the foster care system, the siblings ought to be placed together to give a sense of continuity and attachments.

In my opinion, it is imperative to place siblings up for adoption, and most importantly grouping them to uphold their bonds. The brothers have a strong shared history and bond that allows for continuity of their identity while being adopted. Citing Gass, Jenkins, and Dunn (2007), once a younger sibling is detached from the older sibling, the consequences may be adverse such that the older sibling may develop mental illness, leading to substance abuse. In the case presented above, I learned that for siblings to be fully adopted, the biological parents’ rights must be provoked and terminated when two conditions have been met. The first condition is that the foster care agency must prove the reasons for terminating parental rights. In most cases, the grounds to terminating parental rights are; as a result of failure to perform parental duties to the siblings and lack of significant efforts to overcome the pressing issues. The other condition is that the court enforcing judgment decisions scrutinizes what would benefit the siblings when adopted.

The main CSWE core competency is code of ethics related to sibling’s adoption as well as maintaining siblings’ relationships by placing siblings together. For the siblings being adopted in the foster care system, staying together promotes the sense of mutual support, well-being, and safety. There are traumatic effects created through the separation of siblings, such as anxiety and grief over the well-being of the other siblings.
