The current political events in the Philippines are diverse. The country is faced by issues of extrajudicial killing where militants, journalists, and drug personalities are killed outside the law. The issue of political dynasties and interventions on the oligarchs and the charge on the politics are also rampant. Corruption and controversies are on the rise for instance in the PDAF scam and involvement of politicians in the trade of narcotics. The Philippines is also currently faced by the issue of fake news and politically-biased media and the judiciary. Some of the media outlets are not neutral about political events so as to cover the factual ones and the internet is manipulated by the political army of the trolls in diverting factual news. The intervention of the superpowers is interfering with the country's foreign and domestic policy (Escaros, 2018)

I think the current political events have made the government powerless despite being in power. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte promised the nation a genuine change in the country through constitutional reforms. However, the few Elite Oligarchs are working hard to sabotage the president’s plans so that the constitutional reforms will not succeed. Those against the reforms benefit from the current economic protectionism unitary president system. Therefore, they are afraid the new system will impact the economic monopoly, because of the likelihood of regions progressing and developing to a point they could no longer influence the politics and the government.

I believe the current issues in the country can only be eliminated if the citizens become aware of the government's purpose, its functions, and that they have the power to demand a good and functioning government. The citizens can take the first step in getting the nation off the ground and take its rightful place among other nations globally. Blaming politicians is easy, but the blame rests upon the voters, if only they know how powerful their votes really are.
