Politically, polarization is the “divergence of political attitudes to ideological extremes” (Lee, 2019). Elite polarization has changed American politics and is consistently a pertinent news coverage aspect in the US (Lee, 2019). Consequently, contrary to politics coverage that focuses on individual politicians, elite polarization coverage majorly shapes party based divisions as originating in party values instead of strategic concerns. Polarization criticism drives partisans to have a positive evaluation of the arguments originating from their non-preferred parties. Besides, it increases bi-partisanship. However, it has no influence on how the partisans support policy endorsement by their political parties. In case of a salient polarization, the report by the Independents has significantly less trusts, efficacy and political interests especially when a polarization cause is mentioned.
The republicans and democrats are divided on basis of ideological differences and the bitter hatred on the basis of political parties is more extensive and deeper compared to the recent past. When political and government news are aired, conservatives and liberals are in two different worlds. There is little, if any, overlap in the sources of news they care about and trust. A recent study in 2019 indicates that the democrats and republicans have been sharply divided on what should be prioritized by the nation (Lee, 2019). The gap between the partisans is still widening. This has not only due to political value differences but on priority issues. Another conducted in 2019; political differences have struck religion based divisions (Lee, 2019). For example, the border wall has divided the Catholics as catholic Democrats and Republicans. Another difference is brought by the differences on illegal immigration and political compromise. These are based on how the news are anchored in the media- the trust placed on them which are on political basis.
