Raising a child can seem to be an easy task. The responsibilities that, however, come with such handling are indeed taxing. It becomes even more challenging for the parent who is seeking to teach some life skill to a toddler. Some of the most daunting tasks for most parent involve potty training and handedness. Many parents have struggled in instilling these vital skills in their children, especially those dealing with small boys. Normally, during the early stages, boys tend to be slow learners compared to girls. Potty training and Handedness are vital abilities that elevate the confidence of young children and help them to cope with their early childhood life effectively.

In order to effectively potty train a child, it is important that a parent does this at the right time. Potty training for girls normally occurs between 18 and 24 months although some might start later, while it occurs between 24 and 27 months for boys or later than that ( Schneider & Janicke, 2018 ). Engaging in potty training or handedness earlier than expected might exert unnecessary pressure on the baby and even lead the process to appear challenging for them. Handedness is likely to begin from 18 months where the child might have a preference to use one hand over the other and become fully evident at 3 years; it is believed to be genetically oriented ( Schneider & Janicke, 2018 ). In order to develop the habit, one has to ensure that they engage the child from the moment when they learn about their interest to engage in the activity. Handedness can be enhanced by the basis of which hand is closest to the object. One can, therefore, place an object close to the hand they would prefer their child to form a habit of using.

When it’s the right time to potty train and learn handedness, the parent may opt to conduct a small party to that effect. Children enjoy parties a lot and this can act as a motivation incentive and lead them to become interested in the activity. It is also essential that everyone around the child reads from the same script. This means that the child should not be taught by someone else, for instance, that they can poop in the backyard. Creating such discipline is very essential. Moreover, the repertoire of stories ought to be expanded in order to keep the child focused on the task at hand. In the event that this does not occur, it is possible that the child`s mind will drift away that they will be easily distracted.

Generally, Potty training and Handedness are vital abilities that elevate the confidence of young children and help them to cope with their early childhood life effectively. Potty training is learned in its entirety, however, handedness has some genetic connotation attached to it. What is most essential for someone to learn about the two is that they ought to motivate the young children so that they can be interested in the tasks. When they do that, they are likely to have a less challenging task engaging them.
