Painting is the process of adding color pigments on a solid surface to create different shapes and forms ( Doyle, 2017). Visually-based art brings out the ability of the artist to express themselves. The artwork Speak No" by Michaela Pilar Brown is painting genre which displays a human face with a cross on the mouth. Speak No is also a representational art which present armed soldiers on a black woman head protecting her thoughts. The artist brings in realistic drawings of the actual face resemblance and abstract illustration when it comes to the marked "x" on the mouth. Directly below the chin, there is a black Kewpie doll with the left upper arm lifted. The dolly is also holding a sword, and it's vertically positioned across the shoulder. The "x" on the mouth, which is a representation of no speaking, is colored in red.
The technique the artist used was an oil painting on canvas cotton (Hellen & Kilmurray, 2016). Where she creates a sketch and applies the initial coats of paints, then painted the organic shapes and forms and includes texture and paint colors to achieve the desired hue intensity. Further, the image uses pencils, ink, paint, and watercolor as a medium for creation. The artist uses both positive and negative space in the art. For instance, the horizontal space between the ear to the shoulder creates a negative space.

Regarding contrast and proportion, the artist highlights the differences in the art piece from the three-dimensional shape, color, and all elements enclosed in the portrait size (Doyle, 2017). The different color medium used enables the viewer to identify and differentiate actively passed messages. Light brings life into art. once a light strikes the art, a reflection is made back to the eye to allows color distinction. There are many darker spots on the image, which emphasizes blackness (Heinrich, 2015). The slightly lit areas, the forehead, eyes, nose, neck mouth, and upper part of the painting help the viewers recognize the subject.
