Success in any undertaking requires that one incorporates various principles through the course of whatever is being done. In doing so, the process becomes deliberate and there is a clear way through which things are to be done. There are many success principles from which one may choose. However, understanding the concepts of selective attention, spaced retention, and habit formation and applying them brings one closer to success.

Selective attention is associated with the success principle of being able to accomplish one’s goals in spite of distractions that may persist. It is a concept that is all about filtering the kind of information that one wants to consume and not paying attention to the rest (Stevens & Bavelier, 2012). One must acknowledge the fact that people are constantly subjected to multiple forms of sensory information at any one moment in time. It is impossible to process all that at one go. Therefore, a person would need to develop a mechanism for taking in only that which is relevant to a given situation. In learning, selective attention comes in handy as it helps one to only focus on the important details and not anything else that may be out there (Stevens & Bavelier, 2012).

Undoubtedly, one needs to apply selective attention to future endeavors to guarantee success. It will be important in helping to focus one’s attention to the tasks that matter instead of splitting it across several meaningless undertakings. Therefore, it will help to achieve efficiency.

Spaced Repetition

Spaced repetition is associated with the success principle of mastery. It is based on the belief that it is easy to forget something that one learnt if they do not practice or rehearse it. Therefore, it is a great way of learning as it involves a person constantly practicing the knowledge that they acquired until it sticks (Thomas, 2014). Most importantly, it allows one to gain mastery of a particular concept or subject area.

One of the areas where spaced repetition has proven handy is in studying. One can easily forget something that is learnt today but is not applied consistently. However, by making flashcards and practicing often depending on the nature of the subject and the required intensity, it becomes possible to master things that were otherwise seen as difficult.

Habit Formation

Undoubtedly, success requires that one establishes consistency and that is related to habit formation. Establishing patterns and predictability is important as it helps one be more time efficient and to make the most put of each opportunity (Thomas, 2014). When setting goals, one needs to have a way in which they do things and which is constantly repeated to ensure that they can develop a way of getting things done. Having a defined way of doing things is important as it ensures that one has a set way of doing things and that they are able to have a standardized way of approaching tasks (Thomas, 2014).

Habit formation is one of the most important things for guaranteeing success. When approaching a task, it is important to break it down into small bits that then allow an individual to focus on manageable actions. Apart from that, the habit of setting a clear action plan for the accomplishment of a particular goal is critical to ensuring that one stays on track and that they are not distracted.
