It is the responsibility of the top management team to act as bosses and at the same time be friendly. They need to be able to encourage their employees to meet the expectations of the company and maintain their levels of discipline. In situations where there are disciplinary cases as seen in the scenario, management needs to take the necessary action and ensure that there is fairness.
The Necessary Actions
In the case study, it is evident that employee has called in sick approximately five times and has also been coming late. Even though the employee has gone through the coaching process, there is demand from top management for action to be taken with regards to the absenteeism issue. The first step needs to be conducting a counseling review to inform the employee of the increased concern over the rate of absenteeism and try to find the reasons behind it ( McGrail, 2008) . The employee needs to be informed that improvement is expected based on monthly reviews or the next step will be taken. The second stage is a verbal warning if the problem continues. If the employee still does not improve, the third step is the written warning stage where the employee will also be given the chance to give his reasons for his absence. The final stage will be terminating the employee where the employee and the steward will be taken through the absence record. The employee will also be given a chance to respond and if genuine reasons are established then the employee can be re-deployed.
