Safety of the Playgrounds

Introduction

According to John Tierney, the safety of the playgrounds is questionable. Despite children suffering minor physical injuries, it is arguable that these kinds of playgrounds instill emotional development like fear and anxiety which have a long-term effect on children.

Question 1

Ellen Sandseter argues that, for children to overcome fear, they have to endure risks at the playground. This statement is not true as most playgrounds in the United States are too risky and dangerous for children. For instance, the high heights meant to give children challenge can cause some form of injury; this damage can result in permanent emotional and physical harm. In this case, safer playgrounds can equally give children the experience needed as they rarely cause emotional and bodily harm. Additionally, it is arguable that a teenager who falls from heights when a child can develop a fear of heights, this forms the basis of why children need safer playgrounds to prevent this kind of phobia.

Question 2

According to the psychosocial theory, development takes place in all the stages of an individual’s life. Most of the development involves emotional growth and development. In this case, the environments where children play have a substantial effect on their personality. According to Sandseter, children use the ideas and techniques acquired from game to conquer phobia as adults. This statement is true because the nature of play children involve themselves will determine the emotional being and mental stability of the children. Therefore, if children are participating in the play that entails great height, it can significantly eliminate phobia during adulthood.

In conclusion, play is necessary for children for both physical and emotional development. Also, the play gives children the experience needed in life. However, the safety of the playgrounds should be the priority. Heights can be a good experience to children but, if the children suffer physical injury as a result of a fall, it can lead to emotional damage and fear of heights. Therefore, for an emotional and physical development of children, a safer playground is necessary.
