People react to situations differently. Most people celebrate with joyous reactions in times of positive moments, such as in success. However, some people spring back from the trouble times by taking an instant affirmative action while others fall into doom and fall into a depressive state. Most people currently fall into depression than before because the world has become more complicated. Socially, most people's emotions tend to run low whenever they encounter problems that cannot handle. The downward spiral experience is marked with symptoms affecting both the physical and the mental functions of the body. Unlike before, people are currently required to make decisions in every turn they make in life (Goldman, 2019). As a result, cases of depressed individuals are rising rapidly. This dilemma forms the basis of this study. This study will conduct in-depth research on the current trends in depression and draw a link between depression and psychology. Depression majorly affects the social and emotional concepts of the body, which are critical aspects of psychology.

Background Information

Lack of adequate information about depression made people think of depression as a psychosis form. Depressed individuals were traditionally viewed as mere ‘crazy’ people. However, this view has changed alongside the developing trends about depression. While a little has changed about the understanding of the meaning depression, most people are currently convinced that depression is a form of mental health problem. According to Goldman, 2019), depression is a mental health condition associated with an overwhelming feeling of isolation, sadness, and despair, which affects the thinking pattern of an individual. It also affects how an individual thinks or feels. The depressive condition may interfere with the daily life of the patient significantly. Extreme depressive conditions may prompt suicidal thoughts. The understanding of depression is broadening into modern society (Goldman, 2019). This trend is significant because it creates awareness about the depressive situation's actual outlook, thereby posing a joint effort towards combating depression. Depression should not be misinterpreted to mean loneliness, sadness, or grief due to the recent or distant past grief experiences because it is one of the forms of mental health conditions (Goldman, 2019). Hence, there is a close link between psychology and depression. For example, depression affects the functionality of the brain, while psychologies study the brain's development and functionality.

Findings from the preliminary study revealed that depression is among the leading causes of mental illnesses in the United States. More than 40 million individuals are affected by depression in the US. The number of people affected by depression increases by almost 18.1% annually. Fortunately, depression disorder is currently treatable (Goldman, 2019). Individuals suffering from depression disorder are about 3-5 to seek medication and are six times more likely to be admitted for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from depression. This fact indicates that most depressive patients seek medication later. The depressive disorder develops form various complex factors such as genetics, the chemistry of the brain, disappointing life events, and personality (Goldman, 2019). The most common depression form in the US is the Persistent Depressive disorder (PDD, which continues for over two years, thereby explaining why most depressed patients who seek medication are most likely to be hospitalized. DPP affects almost 1.5% of the US population, or 3.3 Americans (Goldman, 2019). The most affected people are women compared to men.

Discussion

This research has offered adequate evidence that link depression to severe psychological issues. Goldman (2019) states that depression is a mental disorder that majorly affects the mood, feeling (Goldman, 2019). Initially, depressed individuals were perceived as being sad, lonely, or merely crazy. Current trends on depression have broadened the understanding of depression and offering the actual meaning and situation of depression in society. Depression affects the social aspect of life by tampering by the functionality of the brain significantly. It affects people of all ages. However, it is common among adults between 18 and 40 years compared to any other age group (Goldman, 2019). It is also experienced mostly among women compared to men. Regardless of the case, people suffering from depression experience a variety of symptoms. According to Goldman (2019), the most common symptoms of depression include being antisocial, sad, and lacking energy. Scientists link the misbalancing of the brain signal chemicals to the primary cause of depression. In this regard, asking the patient about the family's mental health history, behavior and mood patterns, and suicidal thoughts is the recommendable diagnosis plan for depression. Unfortunately, almost half of depressed Americans fail to get treatment. This situation is worrying because failing to treat depression sets offsets of emotional, social, and health consequences. According to Cuijpers et al. (2019), treatment for depression includes medication, psychological therapy, or a combination of prescription and psychological medicine. Psychotherapy offers the best solution to depressed individuals because besides fostering physical being of the body, it also nurtures emotions and social aspects of life.

Conclusion

To sum up, depression is a mental condition that is marked with tiredness, sadness, and loneliness. It is most common among women and adults between the age of 18 and 40. The understanding of the meaning of depression has changed over time, with the current generation shifting its view of it as a poor crazy state to a mental condition that might worsen if not treated timely and expertly. Unfortunately, almost half of the depressed population fails to get the recommendable medicating. Untreated depressive conditions may lead to severe mental and social issues. Depressed individuals should seek psychotherapy, which is a combination of treatment and counseling. Psychotherapy has proved in various settings to work better in helping depressed patients.
